Generally, an unhealthy and unbalanced diet, a ‘fad’ diet is one which promises quick weight loss. They are targeted at people who want quick weight loss results without any form of exercise, but the actual fact is some fad diets are only about water weight loss.

Despite the usual wariness regarding ‘fad’ diets, certain high-quality controlled studies have managed to prove its effectiveness. These diets, if applied rightfully, can be healthy, well-balanced and sustainable. Fad diets restricted to certain foods have the potential for working.

The list of effective ‘fad’ diets include:

  • Vegan Diet

Vegan diets are almost a craze between people in a bid to lose weight quickly. They are ethically healthy, although being regarded as unbalanced for containing no animal products. It is the food items that constitute the vegan diet, and which determines whether it is healthy or unhealthy. However again, eating large amounts of processed vegan foods and beverages does not help in weight loss.   • The Zone Diet

Created by the US-based biochemist, Dr. Barry Sears, the Zone diet strictly restricts to a ratio of protein, carbs and fat. The diet focuses particularly on optimal weight loss and overall development of health. The Zone diet refers of a specific eating plan, which includes a calorie intake of 30% lean protein, 30% healthy fat and 40 % high-fiber carbs, and they are to be consumed as a prescribed number of “blocks” during meals and snacks.

The Zone diet can help reduce inflammation; this allow weight loss more easily. Studies have proven the effectiveness of Zone diet with the reduction of blood sugar and insulin resistance.   • Paleo Diet

Interestingly, the Paleolithic diet is abbreviated as the Paleo diet, which borrows from the eating habits of early men, specifically hunter-gatherers. Hence, there is a predominance of red meat, lamb, bison, poultry, and other lean meat in this diet. There is a restriction in dairy products, legumes and grains. The paleo diet is actually healthy because of the elimination of processed foods, allowing the consumption of a wide range of animal and plant foods. Weight loss incurred with the help of this diet actually makes the body healthier by promoting the loss of visceral fat, ultimately contributing to reductions in insulin, blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • Atkins Diet

Developed by cardiologist, Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet is a quite popular low-carb diet that has claimed rapid weight loss without hunger. This diet deals with eating high-protein foods like meat, fish, etc. and high-fat foods like butter, cheese, etc. while restricting carbohydrates and alcohol.

It is a four stage program consisting of the induction phase, the ongoing weight loss phase, the pre-maintenance phase and the lifetime maintenance phase. It has been proven to be frequently more effective for weight loss, along with decreasing risk of heart disease.

However, ‘fad’ diets have no proven long term sustainability. Therefore, it is advisable to follow a healthy way of eating that is adaptable to the body.
