Cancer Symptoms men must not ignore

Best ways to fight a disease, especially when it comes to cancer, is to catch it in the early stages. As cancer symptoms are similar to that of other diseases, it becomes important to pay attention to pains and aches that last longer than they should, or which are getting worse with the passage of time. Here are some signs and symptoms that are associated with cancer that you should never ignore.

Blood in your stool or pee

Blood in your stool or pee is among the first signs of cancer of the bladder, kidneys or colon. Consult your doctor for any bleeding that is not normal, even if you have other conditions like hemorrhoids or a urinary tract infection.

Changes in testicles

Any change in testicles, such as a lump or if you notice any heaviness may indicate cancer and one should never delay consulting a doctor. Testicular cancer doesn’t grow slowly like prostate cancer. In cases of changes in testicles, the doctor will conduct physical exam, blood tests and ultrasound of the scrotum.

Changes in Skin

Appearance of a spot on your skin or a change in the shape, size and/or color of a mole may indicate skin cancer which is the most common form of cancer among men. Spots that are different looking or are new are top signs of skin cancer.

Problem in peeing

Many men face problems when peeing as they get older. Problems such as frequent urination especially at night, a burning sensation when peeing, a weak stream, etc. may indicate an enlarged prostate but these symptoms are also caused by prostate cancer. If you face any of the problems, consult your doctor at the earliest. The doctor will examine you for an enlarged prostate and may also call for a blood test, called the PSA, for diagnosing prostate cancer.

Swelling in lymph nodes

Lymph nodes are small bean shaped glands found in the neck, armpits and other places. The swelling of lymph nodes indicates that the immune system is fighting a sore throat or cold, but certain cancers have been known to trigger the swelling of the lymph nodes. If the swelling or tenderness doesn’t subside within 2 to 4 weeks, a visit to the doctor for examination is needed.

Trouble in Swallowing Food

Problem in swallowing food from time to time as usual.  But if the problem persists and you are losing weight or vomiting, you might want to get checked for throat or stomach cancer. This might be done by throat exam and a barium x-ray. Barium test requires you to drink a special liquid that makes your throat stand out when x-rayed.

Persistent Cough

A nagging cough in nonsmokers is usually not cancer. Most of them don’t last beyond 3 to 4 weeks. But if the cough persists and you are short of breath and coughing blood, visit your doctor as soon as possible, especially if you smoke. A nagging cough that lasts beyond 3 to 4 weeks is the most common sign of lung cancer.

Lumps in breast

Yes, men do get diagnosed with breast cancer. But most men ignore breast lumps, which are the first sign of breast cancer until it’s very late. So, if you find a lump, get it checked by your doctor.

As most of us don’t visit the doctor as often as we should, it becomes important that we pay attention to signs and symptoms that may indicate cancer before it grows or spreads. If you notice any of the mentioned symptoms, don’t procrastinate in consulting your doctor to get them checked.
